Salomon South Africa partners with Ultra-Trail Cape Town
On 2 December 2017, UTCT will celebrate its 4th year of continued growth, as well as its debut on the Ultra-Trail World Tour. The event, which includes race distances of 35km, 65km and 100km on and around the iconic trails of Table Mountain, continues to feed a rise in the popularity of ultra-distance mountain races. Its position on both the local and international calendar offers the ideal platform for market leader, Salomon, to elevate their continued commitment to creating the next generation of gear and experiences, as well as to enhance the development of trail running in South Africa.
Salomon marketing manager Jackie Moore, “We see a great synergy in the partnership. Many of the values that are fundamental to our brand are shared by UTCT; a deep appreciation for the outdoors, the importance of community and the progression of the sport of trail running. UTCT has been a catalyst in driving South Africa’s steadily growing status as a bucketlist destination for runners from around the world, and we look forward to a bright future for both UTCT and South African trail running.”
Race director Nic Bornman, “The partnership with Salomon evolved via continued conversation around ‘what’s next’. ‘What’s next’ has been our underlying driver since the races’ inaugural event in 2014.
UTCT has seen rapid growth in four years. From little over 180 runners finishing in year one, to an Ultra-Trail World Tour event of over 1000 participants representing 50 nationalities descending on Cape Town by year four. We are, now, undeniably global.
Salomon is the world’s leading brand in trail running, but they bring so much more. They have formed a unique culture and value set around the sport that transcends traditional sponsorships. For UTCT, Salomon checks all the boxes but most importantly they bring the ‘what's next' factor, and thereby enhance the vision we have for the race. We could not be more excited to partner with Salomon and to position UTCT as a global icon.”
Joining the Ultra-Trail World Tour was certainly always part of the vision for UTCT. In partnership with Table Mountain National Park, this inclusion further entrenches Cape Town, with one of the world’s most breath-taking collisions of ocean, mountain and city, as a trail running hub for both the local and international community. UTCT brings its own brand of magic to the Tour, joining races such as Ultra-Trail Mont Blanc, Marathon des Sables, Western States 100 and Diagonale des Fous (Grand Raid Reunion). Bringing Salomon in to the fold enables increased visibility in the global trail market, and continues to place the Cape on an exciting, worldwide running stage.
UTCT will soon announce the full list of elite athletes lining up on 2 December, but word on the trails indicates a field that South Africa has never yet experienced; a combination of local and international talent befitting of a world renowned venue, and the event’s partners.
