Oaklands Trail Run
The first climb starts at the 3km mark just above the Top Bass Dam and is a relatively short sharp climb which takes us to the top of the plateau. From here we start heading towards the escarpment with magnificent views towards Van Reenen and into KwaZulu Natal.
Stock up at the First Water Point which comes at the 8km mark. Here you will have a chance to look back at the Escarpment and take in the views and sights of Van Reenen & the Free State as well as stock up for the second half of the race.
From Water Point 1 we climb all the way up to Water Point 2 this is when the legs will want to start turning for home.
Water Point 2 will offer you a quick stop to refresh before the district road takes you all the way back to Oaklands. Be prepared for a short sharp downhill into the finish before you stock up on the refreshments, delicious lunch and afternoon entertainment on offer at Oaklands.
Take a chance to relax and enjoy the afternoon with us at Oaklands and prepare of what we have in store for you on Day 2.

From Oaklands we head out through the main gate and around the Oaklands world class Polo Fields. The first 1.5km’s is relatively flat and will get the legs warmed up as well as split up the field slightly before we enter the first section of single track for the day.
We work our way slowly up to the Highest Point of the Day and the event and this is where you will find Water Point 1 at the 5km mark. Stock up here as the work isn’t finished yet for the day.
Between Water Point 1 & Water Point 2 it is a relatively easy section through the local Farms and along a short piece of district Road.
You will reach Water Point 2 at the 8km mark and here you can take in some of the best sights of the Van Reenen Area with views of the Waterfall and Escarpment.
You will now wind your way along the river for the next 3KM’s and start heading back towards Oaklands through the trees and along the single track and cattle paths all the way to Margie’s house.
From Margie’s House you will climb up to the top of the Ridge where you will now be able to see the finish at Oaklands in the distance.
From the Top of the Ridge Single Track and Cattle Paths will take you down to the district road and to the Gates of Oaklands. From here it is a flat run into the finish and a well-deserved rest.
Take a chance to relax and enjoy the afternoon with us at Oaklands.
